Nepal Tamang Ghedung, the sole common national organization representing the Tamang community, was established in 1956 (2013 B.S.). The organization is formally registered with the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, and is one of the eight founding member organizations of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN). It is also a member of the Executive Council of the National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN), established by the Government of Nepal. Nepal Tamang Ghedung currently has a 101-member Federal Executive Committee, including 21 office bearers and a 43-member Secretariat. It has provincial committees in all seven provinces, district branches in 62 districts, local committees in more than 300 rural municipalities and municipalities, and ward committees in more than 700 locations. The organization also has seven affiliated organizations covering women, youth, students, Lamas, culture, Tamba, and Bonbo, along with seven departments focusing on language, communication, industry, employees, Hruie–genealogy, archaeology, and social welfare. Tamang organizations affiliated with Nepal Tamang Ghedung are also active in more than two dozen countries and overseas locations, including Kuwait, India, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, South Korea, Bahrain, Macau, Belgium, Romania, Portugal, Japan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Hong Kong, Australia, Cyprus, Canada, and Iraq. Nepal Tamang Ghedung is a non-profit, common, national, community-based social organization representing the Tamang Indigenous community. Rather than functioning as a conventional NGO, it is recognized as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) and Indigenous Peoples’ Organization (IPO). It represents the political, social, cultural, economic, and educational movements of the Tamang community throughout Nepal. Since its establishment, Ghedung has continuously worked to promote and develop the Tamang mother tongue, script, Lhosar festival, traditional life-cycle rituals, and other aspects of Tamang culture and diversity. It has also advocated for the rights and interests of the Tamang people and for the recognition of Tamsaling identity. Through its work, the organization has brought Tamang people living across Nepal and around the world together socially and culturally. Many of the major achievements in the social transformation of Tamang society are attributed to the significant contribution of Nepal Tamang Ghedung.
