**Nepal Kumal Samaj Sudhar Samiti**, commonly known as **Kumal Samaj Nepal**, is a national-level Indigenous Peoples’ organization established under the Constitution of Nepal and the policies, rules, and legal provisions formulated accordingly. The organization is dedicated to the unity, rights, protection, and prosperity of the **Kumal community**, an Indigenous community with a rich historical and cultural heritage, traditionally residing in various parts of Nepal, including the hills, plains, valleys, inner and outer Madhesh, and other regions. The community is known for its traditional pottery-making profession, indigenous language, religion, script, culture, and arts. The Kumal community is one of Nepal’s minority Indigenous communities that has historically faced social, economic, educational, and political marginalization. The organization was established to address issues such as illiteracy, superstition, and lack of awareness, and to organize, empower, and educate the Kumal community. The organization’s origins are linked to a social awareness movement that began in Palpa around 2028/29 B.S. (1971/72 A.D.). The movement gradually developed into an organized initiative, with an initial committee formed in 2038 B.S. (1981/82 A.D.). In 2050 B.S. (1993/94 A.D.), the organization was formally registered in Palpa District under the chairmanship of **Suryabahadur Kumal**. Later, in 2057 B.S. (2000/01 A.D.), with the objective of bringing Kumal communities from across the country under one national organization, it was restructured and registered with the Kathmandu District Administration Office, with its central committee based in Kathmandu. Since that year, the organization has been formally affiliated with the **Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN)** and the **National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN)**. **Kumal Samaj Nepal** has expanded its organizational network to 23 districts of Nepal, including Parbat, Ilam, Syangja, Jhapa, Tanahun, Sankhuwasabha, Arghakhanchi, Chitwan, Dang, Dhading, Gulmi, Kathmandu, Kapilvastu, Nuwakot, East Nawalparasi, Nawalpur, Baglung, Palpa, Gorkha, Rupandehi, Kaski, Surkhet, and Lamjung. The organization also works in collaboration with affiliated organizations such as the **Kumal Students’ Society, Youth Kumal Samaj Nepal, Kumal Cultural Forum, and Kumal Journalists’ Society** to contribute to the overall development and empowerment of the community. ### Historical Leadership Since its establishment, the organization has been led by the following presidents up to its seventh Central General Convention: * **Suryabahadur Kumal** (2050–2053 B.S.) * **Bhaktabahadur Kumal** (2053–2059 B.S.) * **Arjunbahadur Kumal** (2060–2063 B.S.) * **Jeetbahadur Kumal** (2063–2066 B.S.) * **Nagendrakumar Kumal** (2066–2072 B.S.) * **Narendraman Mukhia Kumal** (2072–2079 B.S.) * **Keval Palpali Kumal** (2072–2079 B.S.) * **Telbahadur “Bishal” Kumal** (2079–present) ### Objectives of Kumal Samaj Nepal 1. To develop mutual love, goodwill, brotherhood, and unity among Kumals living throughout Nepal and strengthen national unity within the Kumal community. 2. To conduct research and studies on the origin, history, language, script, culture, literature, and arts of the Kumal community and work for their preservation and promotion. 3. To raise awareness against superstition and social problems within the Kumal community and encourage its integration into the mainstream of national development as an empowered and progressive community. 4. To implement programs aimed at empowering Kumals who have been socially, economically, politically, educationally, or otherwise marginalized. 5. To establish relationships and coordinate with governmental and non-governmental organizations for the research, preservation, and promotion of Kumal language, religion, culture, traditions, arts, and literature. 6. To modernize and commercialize the traditional pottery-making profession, which is an important part of Kumal identity, and provide training to create income-generating opportunities. 7. To produce, distribute, and promote audiovisual materials for the preservation and promotion of Kumal language, religion, culture, traditions, literature, and arts. 8. To publish writings, articles, and creative works by intellectuals from the Kumal community. 9. To maintain records and documentation of Kumals throughout Nepal. 10. To maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward other ethnic groups, communities, and their cultures, social practices, and religious values, and support their development.
