"Tamu Hyula Chhonj Dheen Gurung National Council" is an organization with perpetual succession, established as an organized, self-governing, non-profit, non-political, non-governmental, and rights-based social institution. In recognition of the spirit and objectives of the "Gurung Welfare Association", established in 1954 (2011 B.S.) for the advancement of the Tamu (Gurung) community, the two national organizations of the Tamu community—"Tamu Chhonj Dheen", established in 1992 (2049 B.S.), and "Gurung National Council", established in 2000 (2057 B.S.)—came together with the shared objective of protecting and promoting the rights and interests of all Tamu (Gurung) people. The organizations sought to preserve and promote the Tamu language, script, religion, arts, culture, customs, and traditions, while supporting the social, economic, educational, and linguistic development of the community. They also recognized the importance of uniting organizations with similar objectives and coordinating with Tamu organizations representing different religions, philosophies, political beliefs, and perspectives. Intending to strengthen Tamu unity, protect ethnic identity, preserve the community’s heritage, and secure a dignified future for coming generations, the two organizations decided to merge. Following a Unity General Convention, the two organizations were formally united to establish the "Tamu Hyula Chhonj Dheen Gurung National Council". The organization also seeks to advance the collective aspirations of the Tamu community, including the pursuit of a "Tamuwan autonomous province with the right to self-determination", through unity, democratic processes, and the protection of Tamu identity and rights.
