UN Indigenous Peoples Declaration and ILO Convention 169 Should be Guaranteed in the New Constitution

Photos: SangmoKathmandu, August 8, 2008- Indigenous rights activists in Nepal stressed on the need to incorporate United Nation Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 169 in a new constitution of Nepal as a fundamental rights to secure the rights of Indigenous Nationalities.

Political Conference of NEFIN

NEFIN organized a political conference on state restructuring at Hotel Malla, Kathmandu on 6th August 2008. Altogether 250 participants comprising of leaders of different political parties like Mr. Surendra Pandey from UML, Mr. Dev Prasad Gurung from  UML - Maoist, Mr. Pradip Giri from NC, Janajati intellectuals, Indigenous Peoples Organizations, members of NEFIN - District Coordination Councils, and Janajati civil societies participated and discussed on this burning issue.

JEP Steering Committee Meeting

The meeting was held on 4th August, 2008 at Hotel Royal Singi, Kamaladi and was chaired by Mr. Pasang Sherpa, the chairperson of NEFIN. Mr. Babu Ram Gautam - representative from MInistry  of Local Development, Mr. Chandra Mani Adhikari - representative of Social Welfare Council, Ms. Mandira Poudyal - representative of National Planning Commission, Mr. Dhan Bahadur Majhi and Ms. Sumaya Rai - representatives of Indigenous Peoples Organizations, and the newly appointed JEP Project Director, Mr. Siri Lal Majhi participated in the meeting. NEFIN's advisor and Honorable NPC member, Dr. Chaitanya Subba was invited as a special guest for his valuable suggestions and inputs. JEP Project Manager, Mr. Jyoti Danuwar presented the progress summary of the last quarter from March-June, 2008 and comments were passed on from the members which was recorded by Mr. Ramjee Kongren, JEP Programme Coordinator. Likewise, Mr. Naresh Tamrakar presented the financial status of JEP. The meeting concluded that JEP has made significant progress during the reporting period to conclude advocacy and HMJ programmes. JEP has also implemented planned activities to achieve its objectives as per its goal during the last few months. The meeting decided to ask NEFIN to make its strategic plan in the changed context so that donors will be approached on the basis of the plan for further support after JEP phase out in December, 2008.
